The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

SF: On a par with the first installment. That is to say, from a cinematic point of view this is beautiful, has amazing effects, lovely scenery and the production value is excellent. The first hour was rather enjoyable, however I did find it dragged a great deal towards the second and third hours. However plenty of brilliant things about this (the effect of Thranduil's face) but equally many awful additions which made no sense to me at all (the love story) and didn't enhance the story in anyway. Dragon looks amazing! But wasn't thrilled by this movie as a whole. Of course I'll still see the next one 6/10

50 Eggs: I've just re-watched the first on DVD and, on reflection, it's actually fairly boring. This is much better though. All the things I was looking forward to seeing were in there, and I loved the 'extra' scenes scrounged from Silmarilion and Unfinished Tails, such as Gandalfs face-off with Sauron. I do agree with SF on one point though - the love story was ridiculous and unnecessary. The last act was the best, with Cumberbatch making an awesome Smaug. Credit to Freeman too - he is so much better than Elijah Wood ever was. 8/10

The Raven

SF: I like the macabre side of fiction and cinema but even that didn't help me sit through this. I wanted to leave after an hour from sheer boredom - Saw meets Sleepy Hollow but not as good as either of those films. The killer has a connection to the eccentric, down on his luck genius (non-police guy), the detective in charge brings him in to consult on the case, the game begins. Haven't we seem this before? Yep and delivered better too. There were parts that were alright but nothing can make me ever sit through this again. Luke Evans was the only one trying to hold this together, poor guy. Minus 1 mark for credits that seemed to be made for the new Bond movie 3/10

DonkeyB: I love Edgar Allan Poe. I didn't love this. I didn't really like it... at all. 3.5/10

Immortals

SF: I found Immortals underwhelming. Even though I'm suspending belief (and knowledge of Greek myths) I found the gaping plot holes hard to reconcile, the action good but not gripping and the characters flat at best. Wasn't all bad so an average 5/10

50 Eggs: Oh my God, how do scriptwriters get paid for coming up with plots that make no sense? Its very frustrating because I love the concept, love the depiction of the Greek Gods, and although the fight scenes didn't live up to its spiritual prequel 300, they are still balletic. But because its stupid I can only give it 6/10.

DonkeyB: Just to mess this up for 50 eggs I'm going to get my review in first. A man whistled carols on the tube from Baker Street to Piccadilly Circus. Seriously though, there was a lot to hate and not a lot to like. Where did they get all the petals from? Not one living plant on the whole world. Also I've been down a salt mine it don't look like that. 3/10

Overall - 4.67/10
