Thor: The Dark World

SF: Alas not as fun as the first outing.  The effects are fine, the plot passable and the general feel all worked. Plenty of it was filmed in London, which is always going to win me over some what. I enjoyed it on the whole as the action was OK but mainly I wanted Thor to have more substance and Loki to have more screen time. Generally the main thing it lacked was drive, everything was just ok and I might have got a tad bored now and again. 6/10

50 Eggs: A complete snoozefest. I used to love these marvel films but something has gone badly wrong with them recently. This isn't as bad as Iron man 3 (and certainly not as bad as Iron man 2), but it all just feels so...inconsequential. The action is just too much fit-inducing CGI. I want to see Thor hitting things with his hammer, not a shooty laser spaceship battle. Even the poster is a rip-off of Star Wars. Try harder marvel. 5/10

DonkeyB: Bored the arse off me to be honest. Cineworld also decided to leave some lights on throughout the screening, which is very unhelpful in a normal screening, but in a 3D film is tantamount to terrorism. Its hard enough to deal with the light loss and the fact as a glasses wearer I have two pieces of material to look through without having a spotlight bright enough to follow along with the (leaden) script setting up all kinds of internal reflections between the various layers of glass on my face..... So that spoilt it. Back to the film itself, the script is terrible, only lifted when Hiddleston is on screen. A film entirely of Loki might be interesting. James Hunt battling the most boring, existentially pointless, villains in history across 9 invented parallel universes (or whatever) is incredibly not. The scenes back on earth were at least moderately impressive- the problem with the entirely green screened films I seem to spend an inordinate length of time in these days is there is no sense of scale, or drama. 3/10

Pacific Rim

SF: Godzillas v Steel. If you like any of the following, Power Rangers, Godzilla, Clash/Wrath of the Titans, Transformers, Real Steel, Gundam and Guyver, you will love this. So naturally I thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent special effects, fights on a crazy scale, enough plot and script to hold it together but not enough to ruin pace or bore you. The last thing anyone wants with something like this is too much explanation (see Transformer 2 & 3). A nice amount of cheesy humour and yes you can predict the ending but that's fine with me. Delivers everything you'd expect, don't take it too seriously. 7/10

50Eggs: There were several moments of the script that were so bad that I wondered if it was in fact a Paul Verhoeven style satire. But no, its just bad. What is good, and the reason for my reasonable score, is the action and effects. The first few Robot v Monster scenes are stunning, and the creature design is outstanding - I couldn't wait to see what monster they would come up with next. But even on this front I have to end with a gripe: the film is constantly building up to a huge battle royale finish, but the specific setting for the final fight means the epic scale evident in earlier scenes is completely lost. And so, a mediocre 5/10

DonkeyB: Refused to watch.

Prometheus

SF: I had high expectations for Prometheus. Fortunately it does complement the previous Alien movies whilst carving its own ground. It is however lacking that spark and becomes a bit predictable. I still enjoyed most of it. Noomi Rapace was a fair lead but a special mention is deserved by Michael Fassbender for making David more than just sinister, for me he was the most interesting character carried the film. My main critique is there wasn't any tension which is a real let down. Ridley Scott not totally back on form but almost. 7/10

50 Eggs: This quasi prequel/reboot (Requel? Preboot?) put me in mind of Terminator Salvation, in that it never quite ties in with the feel and plot of it's predecessors. This is not on a par with Alien or Aliens. What it does boast is some excellent performances and breathtaking visuals. And that's why it's getting a generous 8/10

DonkeyB: Its boring. I mean really boring. Predictable, sub 2001 nonsense. Pretentious. It's possible that George Lucas was a script consultant. 4/10
